THE ANNALIST

A unique feature of the Immortal Company is the position of the Annalist and the importance the men put into the annals, or histories of the company. While most mercenary bands have some clerical jobs, especially among the quartermasters and recruiters, the Immortals have elevated the role of the Annalist to that of “Priest” for the company, and the annals as the “Holy Books”. This may sound extreme, but remember that the company welcomes soldiers from all faiths and cultures.Where else would you find a former knight from Valon fighting side by side with a Bedouin Ji-Hassad?It is the Annals that the men turn to for inspiration and even guidance. The tactics of previous leaders, both the  Successful and the defeated are all recorded. The Company Annalist is both the reader and conduit to the traditions of the company and the recorder of the deeds of the men, hence the provider of a type of immortality to the “Immortal Companions”.

THE DUTIES OF THE ANNALIST

These vary from time to time. Each company historian adds his own voice and interest to the job as Annalist. But some things are tradition. The duty of recording the new recruits, the major deeds of the mercenaries and their deaths is almost always the case.To provide some insight into the world and the decisions of the company commanders is another. The fact that most people in the world no matter what culture are illiterate raises the importance of the annalist’s duties. For any scholar the Annals of the Immortal Company would offer an invaluable resource by which to study history. This might explain the losses of several books thought to have been stolen. The recovery of the tomes would be of major importance to any Annalist who might recognize them, though the books’ titles may have been altered.

LANGUAGES

Most of the annals are written in the language of the former Allemanni Empire. This requirement comes from the need to read the earlier books. Most annalists continue to use this tongue out of respect for their predecessors. But this is not always the case.During some periods, the annals were either lost or kept by those who couldn’t read the language of the ancients. But the tradition of the annals was maintained even as a local language was used.Because of the several differences, the duty usually goes to someone with a wide range of language knowledge or at least a talent for them.Below is a list of codes that refer to the various tongues used.

AA - Ancient Allemanni
MG - Magdan
LD - Lydan
HB - Horbalese
TN - Trinnor
JH - Ji Hassan
KR - Kronish
